PhD defence by Zoe Lauri

On Monday May 20, our former convener Zoe Lauri brilliantly defended her PhD thesis titled The Nature of the Risorgimento. Science, Environment and Nation-Building in Nineteenth-Century Italy. In her thesis, Zoe engages in the history of science and in environmental history, and analyses how nature was made into an instrument of legitimisation of the Italian nation in the nineteenth century. The case studies she examines range from the botanical society of the Aosta Valley to the forest institute of Vallombrosa.

Aside from her supervisor, Stéphane Van Damme, and her second reader, Lucy Riall, Zoe’s thesis was examined by historians Deborah Coen (Yale University) and Elena Canadelli (Università degli Studi di Padova).

We congratulate Zoe on the successful conclusion of her doctoral programme, and wish her all the best in her postdoctoral work at the University of Bologna!
